MARY LOUISE FLANAGAN
On March 22, 2012, just one day prior to her 94th birthday, Mary Louise left our presence to join her beloved husband, Thomas Mark Flanagan, whom she married April 20, 1944 in Swissvale, PA where they both grew up. Thomas predeceased her in 1968 and she was also predeceased by her siblings, John, Charles and Ruth. She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Louise “Marlie” Flanagan Bauer, son-in-law, Joe and their sons, Nicholas and Vladimir, of Martinsburg, WV and Susan Jean Flanagan of Lanham, MD; and her son, T. Mark Flanagan Jr., his wife, Patricia Paterno-Flanagan, and their children, Timothy and Jennifer of Great Falls, VA. Mary Louise graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BA in Psychology in 1939. She was a member of the ROTC, The Newman Club and President of her sorority. She would proudly state that, “I never missed one day of school!” She returned for an extra course in Economics after she met her future husband who had a PhD in Economics. She later worked for Boron Oil Company, The National Education Assoc. and was the Administrative Assistant to the Director of NIH for 17 years until her retirement in 1990. She then started her “second career” as a volunteer at Doctors Hospital, Lanham, MD, winning various service awards, including the 10 year record award. She was a remarkable wife, mother, grandmother and friend, a woman with a quick “Irish Smile”, who was very much loved and will be greatly missed.
